Vibraphones have a strong history with jazz. In 1930, drummer Lionel Hampton was playing the vibes for NBC - the three notes they’re known for. He continued to play the instrument and later brought them to a session with Louis Armstrong. From then on, the vibes became an instrument that was quite popular in American jazz music.

There are a lot of people who ask, what’s the difference in a vibraphone vs. marimba? One part you will notice almost instantly is the size. The marimba is much bigger, usually having a couple of octaves on the vibraphone. However, something to note: the classic vibraphone has only three octaves, from F3 to F6. Many of the newer models have C3 to C7, a full four octaves. Most marimbas are still larger - 4.3, 4.6, or 5 octave. The 5 octave stretches a full octave below the 4 octave vibe - C2 to C7. The bars are also very different, giving it a very different sound profile. Vibraphones have motors and lay on felt to procure as much resonance as possible from the keys, which by themselves don’t have a ton. The timbre is metallic but still warm, and has more mids and highs frequency wise. The Rosewood and Padauk used in most marimbas have a very deep, very warm tone, with a little less attack. This of course can be tweaked, for botha vibraphone and marimba, by varying the type and toughness of the mallet you’re using. The marimba has no motor or pedal.
Majestic Vibraphones
Majestic has a great selection and variety of vibraphones to choose from. They have models to use on the field and models to use in concert. The field frames are incredibly durable and are built like tanks! They have huge off-road tires to get over any terrain. Majestic vibraphones have gold bars and silver bars. The gold bars give you a somewhat more lush and warm tone, where the silver bars have a warm tone but with a long delay. The silver bars are actually aluminum with a silver anodized finish. Another great aspect of the Majestic vibraphones is the foot pedal. Many foot pedals have a small foot area, which limits your options of where you’re standing. The Majestic vibraphones have a bar pedal, which gives you a huge area to control the dampening of your instrument. The dual pull rods on the pedal give it a limited resistance, making these instruments a lot more comfortable than the vibes many of us played in high school!
Majestic is also making an exciting new vibraphone with keys made of aluminum, but instead of having a silver finish, it’s carbon fiber. Not only does an all-black vibraphone look very sharp, the sound is fantastic to match! The carbon fiber gives the same warmth you’ll hear with gold and silver finished keys, but it also delivers a very full-bodied sound that’s unique to this instrument. Most Majestic vibraphones also have a great height-adjustment system to comfortably fit a variety of height ranges, which is great for schools.
