Drums
History of Drums
At MyMusicSupply, we started off as a drum company with drums for sale. Drums are all around our world. There's Drums Alive and Drums Across the Mohawk (which is a book, but still!). There are marching drums, drumsets, concert drums, hand drums - and they're everywhere! Some drums are played with drumsticks, others with mallets, and some with your hand! They're in all different shapes and sizes. Here in Denver there's even a festival called drums along the rockies. There's a drum for everyone - especially drums for kids. But where did these all originate from? Drums have been found as far back as 6000 BC in Mesopotamia. They've been used in rituals, marches, and ceremonies.
Concert Drums
Today's concert band uses a lot of different types of drums. There are huge kettle drums which can change pitch on the fly called timpani. The concert band uses a concert snare drum, played like a drumset snare, and a concert bass drum, which is generally played with one large mallet. Concert bands also play certain types of hand drums when playing music from different cultures.
Marching Drums
We've all seen a marching band, and we all know the best part - the drumline! Besides the cymbal line, the drumline is made up entirely of drums that are strapped to a person in one way or another. You have the marching snare line. These snares are quite different than your drumset snare. They're deeper and have kevlar heads. The timbre is quite different as well. Then, you have your tenor line. These guys have a set of toms, much like the toms on your kit. They generally have no reso head, however. You can have 4, 5 or even 6 drums. Some people even play a single tenor drum, which looks a lot like a marching snare without the snare bed. The bass drums are self explanitory, except you have the same head on both sides since you play both sides.
The Drumset
Over 100 years ago, the drum company Ludwig came out with the

Expanding on Mapex...we at My Music Supply are happy to announce that we are one of the few dealers of their new falgship line - the Black Panther Design Lab! This brand new line is the ultimate Mapex kit. The Black Panther Design Lab comes in CherryBomb or Versatus. The CherryBomb sounds a little more vintage, with more control and precision. It's made up of 1mm Cherrywood plies. The Versatus, another hybrid shell made of maple and mahogany, is a classic sound with the ability to sound at home in more situations. Co-created by Russ Miller (who's at the Denver Percussion warehouse for a clinic on August 17th), Black Panther kits feature new features that no other company has. The finishes, for example are applied with a low-mass technique. Other finishes add mass to the outside of the shells and cut off the tone of the drum. This lets the drum speak.
